FROM MECHANICAL INPUT TO DIGITAL OUTPUT

For Mediemuseet at Brandts, I rebuilt a mechanical typewriter as a public digital input device. Each typebar was fitted with a mechanical contact, wired to a custom PCB with a USB-HID chip, so the computer recognised the typewriter as a USB keyboard. Visitors could type physically and watch their text continue onto a digital light display.

I designed the interaction, constructed the hardware interface and developed the electronics and software flow between the machine and the display.
