PARTICIPATORY MEDIA ART · LASER CUTTING, SHADOW THEATRE & REAL-TIME VIDEO MIXING
From paper cut-outs to a city-scale shadow installation
Skyggelaboratorium brought young people together for two workshops in which they made their own short shadow-play films. The starting point was H. C. Andersen’s paper cut-outs: I vectorised selected motifs and made them available in Adobe Illustrator, so participants could remix, extend and transform them into new characters and scenes.
Each design was laser-cut, then animated and filmed in a purpose-built shadow-theatre studio I designed for the project. The work combined drawing, digital fabrication, performance, camera work and collaborative storytelling.
For Odense Culture Night, the films were mixed live in Max/MSP and rear-projected onto paper-covered windows in vacant shops across the city centre. The installation turned unused storefronts into a shared, moving public exhibition—making the young participants’ work visible at an architectural scale.
The project was supported by Ungdomshuset and VUC, with vacant shop spaces made available by Cityhuset.
